Queensland Government delivers more record road spending and jobs for Central West

The Palaszczuk Government will deliver $69.8 million of road infrastructure in 2017-18 for the Central West District as part of a record investment in road and transport infrastructure for the second year in a row.
Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the Central West was one of the many beneficiaries of the blockbuster roads budget announced this week and being delivered under the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP).
“The funding for the Central West District is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s record spend on road and transport infrastructure across the state for the second year in a row, with an investment of close to $21 billion over the next four years, supporting nearly 17,000 jobs,” Mr Bailey said.
“This will include $272.4 million of works planned supporting around 320 direct jobs just for the Central West District alone, over the next four years.
“This budget shows our commitment to delivering key infrastructure including widening critical sections of the Landsborough Highway and the Diamantina Development Road and creating jobs for the people of living in the Central West and for the entire state.
“We will also commence sealing a 7.2-kilometre section of the Age of Dinosaur Road as part of the Tourism and Transport Connections program, jointly funded with Winton Shire Council.
“The dinosaur museum is one of eighteen major tourist and culturally significant sites in Western Queensland to benefit from round one of the Palaszczuk Government’s $10 million funding injection to provide better transport and road access.”
Minister Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government reconfirmed its commitment to the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) after the previous LNP government gutted the program.
“$6 million will be invested in 2017-18 for the Central West District which means local governments will be able to fund the development of transport-related infrastructure,” he said.
“This is more than a 90 per cent increase in funding compared to what the LNP committed in their last budget.”
2017-18 QTRIP major roads projects for Central West District include:
  • $5.6 million in 2017-18, for pavement strengthening and widening of sections of the Landsborough Highway (Blackall-Barcaldine), at a total cost of $12.5 million.
  • $4.5 million to commence sealing 7.2 kilometres of the Age of Dinosaur Road
  • $2.7 million in 2017-18, for pavement rehabilitation on sections of the Muttaburra-Aramac Road, at a total cost of $3.6 million.
  • $2.1 million in 2017-18, for pavement rehabilitation and widening on the Diamantina Development Road (Boulia-Dajarra), at a total cost of $5 million.
Minister Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to continuing our record investment, building our roads network, boosting productivity, future proofing the state, creating jobs and fostering economic growth.
“We’re repairing the damage done by the LNP who slashed roads funding by $600 million and stalled road infrastructure across Queensland,” he said.

QLD continues the fight for the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital Medical School

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick has today written to Federal Assistant Minister for Health Dr David Gillespie urging him to deliver Commonwealth supported medical school places to ensure the Sunshine Coast University Hospital medical school's future and its ability to train the Sunshine Coast doctors of tomorrow.
Copies of the letter have also been sent to Federal Minister for Health and Sport, Greg Hunt and Federal Minister for Education and Training, Senator Simon Birmingham.
“On Friday, I met with Dr Gillespie in Adelaide and he confirmed to me that the Turnbull Government would not be allocating any additional Commonwealth Supported Places for the study of medicine across Australia,” the Minister said.
"This will result in only full fee-paying international students making up the additional 15 student places that are required to ensure the Sunshine Coast medical school has a full complement of 50 students. 
"A total of 50 students are required to make the medical school viable for a university provider.
"This is an unacceptable and short-sighted outcome for the Sunshine Coast and our state.
"It will also jeopardise the ability to train and attract the medical workforce the growing region needs for the future.
“I urge Dr Gillespie to reverse his decision and instead deliver the Commonwealth Supported Places the Sunshine Coast needs.
“The Sunshine Coast community deserves a quality medical school to match the world-class hospital that has been established by the Queensland Government, so I have today formally written to Dr Gillespie to again urge him to reconsider and reverse this decision.
“To demonstrate the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to the Medical School and as a gesture of cooperation between our governments, I have renewed my offer to fund 50 per cent of the 15 required Commonwealth supported places for the first four years of the medical school to ensure the school is viable.
“However, I have advised Dr Gillespie that I will not provide funding for those 15 places if they only remain as places for full fee-paying international students.
“Unless these Commonwealth Supported Places are forthcoming, I understand that the only way a university provider can make the medical school viable is to recruit overseas medical students at the expense of local students.
“That would be yet another kick in the guts to the Sunshine Coast community who have been badly let down by the Turnbull Government and their ineffective local Federal MPs Andrew Wallace and Ted O'Brien."
