Member for Mansfield Corrine McMillan and Minister for Education Grace Grace have turned the first sod on a $10.4 million learning centre at Mansfield State High School.
Ms McMillan said the three-storey building would be ready for the start of the, with a forecast completion date of November.
“In the lead-up to the 2017 election, I made a commitment to make the renewal of Mansfield State High School a priority and I am proud to say that I am delivering,” Ms McMillan said.
“This fantastic centre will include 12 general learning areas, four flexible learning areas and two staff work areas with offices and amenities.
“Change rooms and disability-access amenities will be located in the under-croft of the building, which also has the potential to be enclosed at a later stage to meet future capacity needs.
“The learning centre will complement a recently finished $7.7 million science centre, which will be ready to accommodate students for the first day of school next week.
“Other works happening at the school in 2019 include the repurposing of Block F into a dedicated music block ($1.59 million).
“All projects have been welcomed with open arms at this fast-growing school, with almost 2,800 enrolments predicted for 2019, expecting to soar to 3,000 in 2020.”
Ms Grace said the three-storey learning centre and science centre projects were part of the Palaszczuk Government’s 2020 Ready program, which would cater for the increased student population as a result of the introduction of Prep in 2007.
“With the original half-cohort of Prep students set to graduate from high school at the end of 2019, we will have — for the very first time in next year — six full-year levels of students in Queensland state secondary schools,” Ms Grace said.
“That’s why we’re investing $250 million in new classrooms and other infrastructure at schools across the state, including here at Mansfield State High School.
“The centre is being built by Kane Constructions, supporting up to 27 full-time jobs during construction which is wonderful news for the local economy.”
Mansfield State High School Executive Principal Karen Tanks said the entire school community was eager to use the centre.
“We are thrilled about how these innovative spaces will help us deliver cutting-edge educational opportunities while catering for the differing learning needs of all students,” Ms Tanks said.
“These new classrooms will also give us plenty of space to accommodate our continued growth in enrolments, particularly the significant increase expected in 2020.”
